The "Earth Energies" series of paintings focuses on the planet Earth situated in a cosmic environment full of energy and activity. The symbolic message of these works is that Earth's physical boundary is not limited to its atmosphere but extends outward to its "real" cosmic boundary - that which is defined by its own gravitational influence in the immediate cosmos. This boundary extends 1,495,000 kilometers from the center of the planet creating a sphere with a diameter of 3 million kilometers which contains 13 million times the volume of the physical Earth. This sphere is sometimes referred to as "Greater Earth".

"Since, in the long run, every planetary civilization will be endangered by impacts from space, every surviving civilization is obliged to become spacefaring--not because of exploratory or romantic zeal, but for the most practical reason imaginable: staying alive... If our long-term survival is at stake, we have a basic responsibility to our species to venture to other worlds."
